CANADIAN JOURNAL OF PHYSICS: XML SOLUTION (CROSS-PLATFORM)

BACKGROUND:

  • Problems with new XML system caused unreasonable delay in publication of Canadian Journal of Physics (CJP)
  • Biweekly meetings were convened with all members of CJP staff
  • All issues (approximately 40 in total) were collected, documented, and prioritized

SOLUTION:

  • Multiple causes of problems were found: cross-platform discrepencies; unacceptable delays in software processing times; training needs not being met; incorrect procedure; software glitches
  • Personally responsible for following solutions:
  • Working with multiple companies/developers to identify source of cross-platform processing delay problem and conceive possible solution
  • Modification of software to solve processing delays
  • Reprogramming of macros and other software to solve cross-platform entity discrepencies
  • Manual addition of entire font sets to cross-platform software
  • Implimentation of solutions in-house and externally, including all instructions and training
  • Retraining of staff where necessary
  • Reformating of procedure as needed, and updates to all training manuals to reflect changes
  • Imaginative workarounds, when solution implementation was delayed

FINAL PRODUCT:

  • New optional software modification allows timely processing of math-intense manuscripts (100+ equations)
  • Correct processing of entities allows for easy identification by copyeditor
  • Correct processing of math across platforms
  • Ongoing staff retraining as necessary resulted in higher confidence and less frustration on the part of staff
